About 2 miles long and 800 feet wide, Roosevelt Island is an island in the East River between Manhattan and Queens, running parallel to Manhattan’s 46th to 85th street. Until the 1970’s Roosevelt Island was known as Welfare Island, housing various hospitals, asylums, and correctional institutions. Since then, the island was turned into a residential community with the construction of a number of high-rise apartment buildings. It is largely a car-free area, however the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) provides an internal island shuttle - bright red buses with a fare of only 25¢ - from apartment buildings to the subway (the F train running on the 63rd Street Line) and the Roosevelt Island Tramway, which provides access to Midtown Manhattan. The recent construction of luxury apartment buildings and luxury condominiums have attracted many your professionals and families, drawn to the unique location and space.
