Union Square is a historic intersection, today known for its young, hip and often radical residents. It is bounded by 14th Street, Union Square East, 17th Street, and Union Square West, close to New York University, whose many students frequent the area. The beautiful park itself is recognized for its numerous statues, such as those of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Mahatma Gandhi. The square has historically been the assembly point for many political demonstrations and today continues to be a center for activism and protests in the city.

The adored markets in Union Square draw in New York’s eclectic residents as well. The open-air Greenmarket provides regional small family farmers with opportunities to sell their produce, attracting the masses to an extensive selection of fruits and vegetables. During the Holiday market, held November 23 through December 24, Union Square becomes filled with kiosks of artisans, selling a variety of knick-knacks, such as candles and jewelry.

With eight subway lines converging here, Union Square is easily accessible from anywhere in the city. The periphery of the square is abundant with prominent restaurants, bars, and high end retail stores. Correspondingly, the real estate in this area continues to be a hot commodity, with new luxury high-rises surrounding Union Square and stately pre-war brownstones can be found on the side-streets just off the park.
